3 Practices to Adopt to Boost Employee Morale

Too many managers and small business owners neglect to care for their employee’s morale and overall mood, thinking that it is an abstract concept that requires no real work. This is an outdated and foolish way of thinking. Numerous studies show that good employee morale is tied to more profit, better work-product, and lower turnover rates. As such, here are three great ways that you can work to maintain your employees’ morale.

Recognition

One of the most important things you can do as a manager or business leader is to formally recognize your employees for their good work. Recognition options run the gamut. On one hand, you can do something as simple as saying thank you and publicly recognizing their high performance. You can also give rewards or bonuses, like cash, gift cards or vacation days. Whatever you do, employees want to know they are valued and appreciated. Showing this appreciation is bound to boost the morale of both the employee you recognize and those around them. This, in turn, will lead to happier employees and more profits.

Company Wide Activities

Studies have shown that corporate events can reinforce company culture. As such, it’s important to hold company activities that encourage your employees to enjoy themselves and bond with their coworkers. These activities should be fun and out of the workplace, and the company should pick up as much of the tab as possible as a way to show appreciation for employees.

Leading by Example

There is little more devastating to employee morale than having a hypocritical boss. We’ve all had them: That boss who leaves early, does nothing, sours the culture of the workplace and leads by fear, rather than by example. This boss will not be a successful one in the long run, and in all probability, the company won’t be either.

If you want to be a successful boss, lead by example. Be the first one in and the last one out. Show your employees and customers the respect they deserve. Remember, your employees will take their cues from you when it comes to the overall workplace culture.

Encouraging good workplace morale requires time, effort and real work. However, you can set the tone and engage in appropriate methods and activities which can make your workplace better. It is well within your grasp, and you can start by applying the tips in this article.
