Culture Analysis

 

I know “company culture” has become a bit of a buzz phrase these days, but in a competitive market your culture can make or break you. Too often I see business leaders with the mindset that they are doing someone a favor by letting them work; but in reality our business does not succeed without the commitment, buy-in, and engagement of employees from all levels. 

I have the privilege of working with business owners from all over the country and I continually hear about the problems they are having with hiring, employee engagement, and turnover. Too often, the real problem lies in the culture they have created and when good employees have options, they will go elsewhere. The solution to these challenges is a shift in management style that adjusts to the ever changing needs of a competitive market. 

Company culture is much like your reputation: it may take years to build, but mere minutes to destroy. We must be intentional with the culture we are creating and even more focused on the culture we want to maintain

Intentionality begins with analysis. I strongly recommend conducting a culture analysis from an outside source every 1-2 years. This may be a friend, mentor, consultant, or peer with another company or affinity group; but be sure it is someone that has the authority, knowledge, and ability to be honest and transparent. This could ultimately save you thousands of dollars or maybe even save your entire business from failing.

Most importantly, be prepared. If there is a problem with your company culture, I can almost guarantee the change will start with you. Resist becoming defensive to this, instead recognize that you are making a positive move in the right direction. Be proactive, be intentional, be the leader you set out to be.
