All jobs require a certain skill-set to perform the tasks of the job well. Some of these are hard skills like the ability to use certain software programs or fix a car engine, and others are soft skills like communication and teamwork. There are certain skills that you will want to make sure you acquire to be the best candidate for trade jobs.

Problem Solving

Many trade jobs will also require you to be a great problem solver. Whether you are a mechanic or an electrician, you will need to be able to figure out how to solve problems when confronted with them on the job. Being a great problem solver requires you to be able to use logic and persevere through obstacles. Good problem-solving skills will help you advance in your career by showing you can overcome challenges. You can improve your problem-solving skills in a number of ways, from asking others for advice on how they would tackle a problem, to trying to look at the problem from a fresh perspective.

Math

You will want to brush up on your math skills if you are interested in jobs in the trades. Math can play a major role in many trade job fields, like construction, information technology, manufacturing, and more. HVAC technicians need to perform multiple calculations in the course of their job. Make sure you keep up with math in high school and take math courses in vocational school if you are pursuing a career path that requires these skills. 

Interpersonal Skills

Interpersonal skills are important to have to be successful at a trade job. Most trade jobs involve interacting with people and providing customer service. You will want to be able to communicate well and be friendly and personable. This will help you gain the trust of the people you are serving and help you retain customers. Interpersonal skills can also help you work through conflicts on the job in a positive and productive manner.

Not all of the skills you’ll need to succeed are ones that can be taught in school, some will have to be learned on the job, or simply through living life. Find mentors in your career field who have the skills you would like to have to help you become successful. Continuing to learn and strengthen your skillset is your best bet for continued career growth and achievement.
